A lady named Mary from California flew to Japan, in her favorite jeans and a casual jacket, to give her first speech. Fourteen hours later, four perfectly dressed Japanese gentlemen greeted her at the airport. Smiling and bowing low, they handed her their business cards. With her bag in one hand, Mary took their cards with the other. She thanked them, glanced briefly at the cards, and put them into her jeans pocket quickly.

When the five of them arrived at the hotel, they invited Mary to tea in the lobby (大廳). While sipping tea, the gentlemen presented her with a small gift which she eagerly opened. She was thrilled with the gift and shouted excitedly, “Oh, it's beautiful!”

At this point, the four Japanese gentlemen stood up and, bowing only very slightly, said “Sayonara” and left immediately. Poor Mary was left astonished. What did she do wrong?

Everything! Her jeans were the first gaffe. Even if you're coming off a bicycle in Japan, you do not meet clients (客人) casually dressed. The second mistake was Mary's handling of their business cards rudely. In Japan, the business card is one of the most important communicative tools. It is always presented and accepted respectfully with both hands. However, Mary put their cards away much too quickly. In Japan, people use business cards as a conversation starter. You chat about each other' s cards and work and do not put theirs away until they gently and respectfully place yours in safe keeping. Putting it carelessly into her jeans pocket was the ultimate disrespect.

Then, the fourth horror of horrors was that Mary should not have opened the gift in front of her clients. In a land where saving face is critical, it would be embarrassing to discover the gift they gave was not as nice as the one they received. What is worse, Mary hadn't even given them a gift!

  21. Why did the four Japanese gentlemen leave Mary suddenly?

  A. Because they had finished the task.

  B. Because Mary had something more important to do.

  C. Because they couldn't bear Mary 's behavior any longer.

  D. Because Mary felt embarrassed.

  22. What does the underlined word “gaffe” in Paragraph 4 probably mean?

  A. ignorance B. carelessness C. sadness D. mistake

  23. The third mistake Mary made was that she ________.

  A. kept her clients' cards in a wrong place B. took her clients' cards with one hand

  C. met her clients in jeans

  D. used her own card as a conversation starter

  24. What lesson can we draw from this story?

  A. Think twice before you take any action.

  B. When in Rome, do as the Romans do.

  C. To save time is to lengthen life. D. One false move may lose the game.

Why do Americans struggle with watching their weight, while the French, who consume rich food, continue to stay thin? Now a research by Cornell University suggests how life style and decisions about eating may affect weight. Researchers concluded that the French tend to stop eating when they feel full. However, Americans tend to stop when their plate is empty or their favorite TV show is over.

According to Dr. Joseph Mercola, a health expert, the French see eating as an important part of their life style. They enjoy food and therefore spend a fairly long time at the table, while Americans see eating as something to be squeezed between the other daily activities. Mercola believes Americans lose the ability to sense when they are actually full. So they keep eating long after the French would have stopped. In addition, he points out that Americans drive to huge supermarkets to buy canned and frozen foods for the week. The French, instead, tend to shop daily, walking to small shops and farmers’ markets where they have a choice of fresh fruits, vegetables, and eggs as well as high-quality meats for each meal.

After a visit to the United States, Mireille Guiliano, author of French Women Don’t Get Fat, decided to write about the importance of knowing when to stop rather than suggesting how to avoid food. Today she continues to stay slim and rarely goes to the gym.

In spite of all these differences, evidence shows that recent life style changes may be affecting French eating habits. Today the rate of obesity — or extreme overweight — among adults is only 6%. However, as American fast food gains acceptance and the young reject older traditions, the obesity rate among French children has reached 17% — and is growing.

  28. In what way are the French different from Americans according to Dr. Joseph Mercola?

  A. They go shopping at supermarkets more frequently.

  B. They squeeze eating between the other daily activities.

  C. They regard eating as a key part of their lifestyles.

  D. They usually eat too much canned and frozen food.

  29. This text is mainly the relationship between _________.

  A. Americans and the French B. life style and obesity

  C. children and adults D. fast food and overweight

  30. The text is mainly developed __________.

  A. by contrast B. by space C. by process D. by classification

  31. Where does this text probably come from?

Everybody in this world is different from one another. But do you know that understanding differences can help you better manage your money?

As we grow up, we gradually develop a set of our own values or beliefs. These are influenced by society, our family, the education we receive and so on. Once this value system is set up, it's not easy to change later in life.

Financial experts say that everyone also has their own belief of how to manage their finances. This is part of our value system and it has a great impact on the way we look after our money.

According to our different values, experts put us in three categories. They are: the ant, the cricket and the snail.

  The ant-works first

Just like ants who work heart and soul in summer in order to store food for winter, these people don't care about enjoying the moment. They work very hard and save money they earn so that they can enjoy life when they get old and retire. The ant loves to save but they could make more out of their money if they were willing to invest in some funds and stocks with low risk.

  The cricket-fun first

The cricket wants to enjoy everything now and doesn't think too much about the future. They even borrow money when they really want something. Many young people now belong to this group. These people have little savings. When they get old, they might have problems. They should learn to save and buy insurance.

  The snail-lives under pressure

The snail refers to people who make life difficult for themselves. They take big long-term loans from the bank in order to buy things such as luxury houses. They are happy to take big loans even though they are not sure whether they can afford it. This can cause problems in the future. They should plan more carefully.

32.We can learn from the text that_________.

  A. we spend money because we have earned it .

  B. saving money is a good way to manage money.

  C. spending money is a wiser way.

  D. your way of managing money is a reflection of your value or belief.

33.Of the three types of people, the one that has no weakness is_________.

  A. the ant B. the cricket C. the snail D. none of them

  34. If you had three dollars, you would spend all of it. Which type do you belong to?

  A. The ant B. The cricket C. The snail D. None of them

  35. The text tells us mainly about_________.

  A. understanding differences B. our own values and beliefs

  C. spending nature D. living behaviors of small animals

  How to communicate effectively

Effective communication is a must for everyone who hopes to be successful. It helps express your thoughts and improves your career prospects (前景) as well as strengthens relationships. Therefore, it’s necessary to work hard to improve your communication skills.

  36

Before you are ready to talk to a group of people, you should think about what you are going to talk about. Although a printed copy of a speech may not be always necessary, highlighting a few important issues in your mind is a must. 37 And it reduces the possibilities of getting away from the main issues.

  Choose your words

Choice of words is the most important part of any communication. Simple, clear words are appropriate for the issue you are discussing. Needless to say, words that could make your audience unpleasant are best kept out of the communication. Most people tend to be careful about their language while at work. 38 This may hurt your loved ones beyond your imagination.

  Body language

Many people use body language by mistake and end up making a fool of themselves. Body language means keeping eye contact and using hand gestures only wherever required. 39 This will make your talk more of a stage performance and defeat its purpose.

  Listen and concentrate

Communication is an exchange of ideas. Once you are done with your part, listen carefully to what other people plan to say. 40 Get rid of all distractions (分散注意力的事物) such as a phone before you begin communication. A distraction not only disturbs your focus, but it also causes your audience’s attention to wander.

  A. Gather your thoughts

  B. Prepare a copy of a speech

  C. However, when they get home they often use colorful language.

  D. This will help you remain focused throughout your communication.

  E. If you are giving a speech, it is important that you focus on that activity only.

  F. Effective communication is a gradual process and requires efforts on your part.

  G. Remember, there is no need to speak every word with a gesture or facial expression.
